Founded in 1914, the Meira plant is one of the few factories in downtown Helsinki and has long operated on environmentally friendly natural gas, the use of which does not cause any particulate or sulfur dioxide emissions. The company switched to carbon dioxide-free biogas in ketchup production, which further reduces the plant’s environmental impact.

Due to its environmental friendliness, biogas is an excellent choice for companies operating in the downtown area. Biogas is carbon dioxide-free, which means that there are no CO2 emissions from production. In addition, biogas is completely domestic. In industrial and process use, biogas, like natural gas, is an efficient, hassle-free and safe form of energy.

“We also want to promote sustainable urban development in Meira’s operations. Biogas is thus a natural choice for us, and the transition to use it is an important step towards more sustainable production”, concludes Patrik Lindholm, Meira’s Production Director.

Biogas is sold and supplied by Suomen Kaasuenergia. “The importance of ecology has been further emphasized in consumer purchasing behavior and biogas is an excellent response to this trend. Many companies in the food industry have switched to biogas, as they can add value to their products through an environmentally friendly manufacturing process. In a plant like Meira, located in the downtown area, biogas is likely to increase the environmental friendliness of production”, says Pekka Karinen, Sales Manager at Suomen Kaasuenergia.

In Finland, biogas is produced by Gasum with 12 own biogas plants and 3 partner plants. Max Miilakangas, Sales Manager at Gasum, also wants to emphasize the environmental friendliness of biogas: “Gasum biogas is a carbon-neutral fuel made entirely from renewable raw materials, the raw materials of which are generated from the by-products of industry and society. We live in a time when ecological choices are even more important. The use of biogas has increased significantly in recent years, which we are very pleased about. ”
