For some children and families, the Christmas season is the most unsafe time of the year due to the threat of domestic violence and abuse. Last year, the Federation of Mother and Child Homes and Shelters helped more than 23,000 families seeking help often in difficult circumstances. The number of children seeking help has increased again this year as, according to the Federation, substance abuse, domestic violence, parenthood challenges and mental health problems have increased in families with children over the past few years.

The Federation of Mother and Child Homes and Shelters and its 30 member associations across Finland employ around 1,000 professionals, with 1,700 volunteers working for families and their well-being. In 2022, the volunteers provided almost 24,000 hours of support to families in different situations. Volunteers’ support is an important help in coping with difficult situations.

“We at Sokos Hotels believe in a better tomorrow. We want to make more and more people happy, both inside and outside our hotels. The work of the ETKL staff and volunteers is invaluable to many families in their time of need. We warmly thank them for their valuable work. On Volunteers’ Day on 5 December, we will thank them with a coffee break at their member associations and a leisurely breakfast for them and their companion at Sokos Hotel,” says Jaana Matikainen, Vice President for Development & Concepts at SOK.

“We share both our joys and sorrows over a cup of coffee, and oftentimes it is the coffee break that ensures we take a moment to catch our breath. I am delighted that, in partnership with Sokos Hotels, we are able to pay this kind of attention to those who do important work and their loved ones,” says Susanna Koroma-Nyström, Customer Marketing Manager at Meira.
